For me, the earthquake felt like an explosion that lifted me into the air and then rocked me back and forth. I had been living in a 70-year-old Nagaya, a two-story row house in Ashiya. When the shaking stopped, I cautiously descended the broken staircase and made my way toward the front door. Midway through putting on my running shoes, I realized I might need sturdier footwear. Quickly, I changed into hiking boots\u2014an excellent decision, as moments later I was climbing over the rubble of nearby homes that had been destroyed.<\/p>\n

Due to the tilt of my house, the front door was jammed, and I was unable to get out. Eventually, I kicked my way through the glass sliding doors that led to the front garden. After leaving my home, I ran to check on Debby, a neighbor who lived in a similar Nagaya. I found her house had completely collapsed. Calling out her name, I felt a great relief when she answered from somewhere beneath the debris.<\/p>\n

I began removing what I could, but realized it was taking too long. I called out to our other neighbors, Lester and Steve, for help, and together we worked to clear away the broken pieces one by one. Finally, we reached Debby and pulled her out. We moved to the next unit in the Nagaya and rescued a few more people with minor injuries. Standing on the rubble was a young man who told us he still had not found his parents. We called for them, but there was no answer. As we continued to remove debris, I crawled under the broken beams and discovered the bodies of his parents still in their bed.<\/p>\n

We took Debby to a nearby hospital, but without power, no x-rays could be performed. The best the nurse could do was guess that she had broken ribs and wrap her securely. We also brought the bodies of our neighbors to the hospital and left them there with their son.<\/p>\n

In the days following the earthquake, we spent most of our time salvaging what we could from Debby\u2019s house. Several times, people we didn\u2019t know stopped by and offered us onigiri (rice balls). On the third day, Debby and I were at a friend\u2019s house for dinner. He had set up a camping shower filled with warm water boiled on a portable propane gas stove. This was my first shower in days, and it felt wonderful to be clean again.<\/p>\n

About a week after the earthquake, I volunteered with the Canadian Consulate as a driver and interpreter for a crew flown in to build temporary structures. Delivering the materials was challenging due to traffic congestion. We had a police escort, but it was ineffective; the escort did not use his authority to navigate through the traffic. We remained stuck in congestion, just like everyone else. If he had used his siren to move quickly, we could have built more structures each day, but for some reason, they felt they did not have the power or desire to use their authority.<\/p>\n

Having lost my house, I spent the year after the earthquake moving from place to place, staying with friends, friends of friends, and colleagues. Everyone was incredibly kind and wanted to help.
